Day 32
This morning Austin decided to pull out his ventilator tube. As you can see from the picture above, the device that is helping him breathe looks a little different than a mechanical ventilator. It is known as a nasal CPAP. A nasal CPAP device consists of a large tube with tiny prongs that fit into Austin's nose, which is hooked to a machine that provides oxygenated air into his air passages and lungs. The constant pressure from the CPAP machine helps keep his lungs open so he can breathe.
The nasal CPAP was the next step for Austin, but was something that we didn't anticipate until he was closer to 1000 grams. So far, Austin is doing well with the CPAP. He has lost a little bit of weight...weighing 780 grams tonight. We appreciate all of the support and prayers!
"The Lord longs to be gracious to you; He rises to show you compassion..." Isaiah 30:18

that is awesome for them to try cpap!Even if he doesn't last on it, he is one of the smallest infants I have seen they try it on! Praise God!Maybe he is trying to show off for Brooke! He is in my prayers and I will be checking on him! Kim

By the Grace of God and the POWER of PRAYER!!!I am thankful to all who are praying for him ......
He is a TRUE miracle....God's gift
He is touching all of our lives and making us realize how precious life is that we all take for granted. My mom made me think about all this but to see such a small baby fight for his life.... A TRUE MIRACLE.......AMEN..AMEN...

My children did NOT like the CPAP and didn't stay on it very long [in both directions...one went on to the nasal cannula, the other back to the jet ventilator]. I always thought it makes 'em look like SCUBA divers. You might want to try a pacifier with the top half cut off so as to fit snugly under the apparatus. It gave Mary Jo the necessary oral comfort.
Still praying for your guy. He's moving in the right direction. Weight isn't the only indicator of wellness.
