Day 38

Austin was sleeping away during our visit this evening. Today, the approach was 6 hours on the cannula and then 3 hours on the CPAP mask. The last couple days, the rotation was 3 hours on each. His nurse did mention that his oxygen requirements do increase a little while he is on the cannula. We'll see how he tolerates the 6 hours of the cannula through the night. The picture above shows the CPAP mask.

He weighed 885 grams this evening which is just over 1 pound, 15 ounces. Next up is 2 pounds!! To us, Austin's weight gain was really noticable tonight. His feeding was increased to 16 cc's of breast milk every 3 hours. Good thing he keeps eating more...I could start a dairy farm with the all the breast milk in our freezer. At least I know I can always grab a quick bowl of cereal ;-) While I joke about it, I must say how impressed I am with Gina's dedication to "pumping" every 3 hours, including the middle of the night. It is a big part of Austin's progress to date. True trooper!

  • Hey Jon and Gina,
We pray for your little Austin every night! Matthew and Ben pray that "Austin will get chubbier" and that "his lungs will heal." We check your blog site often and enjoy the pictures to put a sweet face to our prayers! I was reminded of this verse recently in Ephesians 3:20 I thought I'd share with you:"Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine...to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!" Love In Christ, Wendy

  • AMAZING!!!!!!!
He is a true blessing and a sign from GOD that he is here with us and helping Austin get better. Anyone that doesn't believe in God after hearing about Austin should have no doubt that GOD is real.

It was a great joy to see Andrew while he was here in Ohio. Jay had a blast with him......

We miss seeing you guys, We love you very much......

  • Jon, Gina and family,
You are so right when you say that there are many others keeping tabs on Austin that you are not aware of. Weeks ago Fritz had sent an e-mail to the Owen family with Austin's site attached and we have all been checking in. This was very apparent during my time away the past few weeks. Having been in Texas with Kelly and then in Pennsylvania with Aunt Janet, Uncle Bob and the Roger Owen family; regular updates were shared by Kelly, Karli and Lori who have been checking in each day on Austin's progress. Lori our Pediatric-ICU nurse was a wealth of information interpreting your reports. The Kura's are a strong family unit and Austin is blessed to have all of you. Know that the ripple of strength, faith, and prayer from your family continues out to Austin's extended family; that includes all of us. Love to all of you. Lois and family

  • Re: the every three hour pumping. You might find a slice of heaven to skip the middle of the night pumping. Maybe every once in a while sleep until your breasts wake you up.

Undisrupted sleep can also help in your milk production. It helped me when I switched to one less session a day and my total ccs/day remained the same or even increased. Trust me. Your fullness will wake you.
